Bunga reflects on the obsession of Western civilization with conservation, proposing that one of the essential characteristics of civilization is the control of the forces of entropy. In this tradition, hospitals and museums play a central role as spaces dedicated to the conservation of humanity or its cultural heritage.
The exhibition alludes to the double nature of the Amparo Museum’s conservation temple. Its viceregal building originally housed the Hospital de San Juan de Letrán, the first health institution in the city. This condition triggered an investigation into the museographic and religious conservation devices active around it, specifically showcasing cabinets and niches. For Bunga, making the universe flexible involves questioning the symbolic crust of permanence, stability and solidity that Western civilization has perfected so successfully. In this installation, the ephemeral nature of Carlos Bunga's work puts traditional conservation devices in tension to invite reflection on its ideological implications.
