“Inspired by the night, this proposal for the Biennial is an attempt to open a speculative fissure, one that does not propose any answers, but raises many questions. It is an attempt to invent other modes of existence, of relating, of being and living together.” -Elfi Turpin & Filipa Oliveira
For the first installment of the two-part biennial, Bunga presented Descolonizar o Pensamento, a work which questioned the way of looking at the exotic other, symbolized by the Angolan sculptures in the Science Museum of the University of Coimbra.
For the second installment, the artist moved into the intimate plane for a personal reflection on his history, through a video art piece. In 2002, he filmed a conversation with his mother in which she talks about her personal story. She tells him of fleeing from her land after her sister’s birth, and recounts the whole process of leaving Angola for Portugal.
