María Pilar Cerezuela and Enrique Vallés’ collection, Colección Valzuela, is characterized by its unusual historical and disciplinary breadth. The manner of its constitution leaves behind the anecdotes and sensations typical of something whose purpose was none other than the configuration of the daily environment where life takes place. The objects constitute not only a backdrop, but also the layers of memory that concentrate a good part of the experiences lived around this passion and its link with everyday life.

The exhibition aimed to transfer an extract of that daily environment and peaceful coexistence, between periods and disciplines, through an evocative montage of that very personal narrative of what a collection can be.

“Making love to plant trees” – which gives name to this exhibition – is extracted from the letter that the writer Jean Giono sent in 1953 to the French Department of Water and Forests, offering the rights to his novel The man, who planted trees to train citizens in a commitment to the environment.Planting a tree is a defining gesture, posing a long-term commitment, and it outlives and affects us; it’s a symbol of responsibility, a contract with posterity. Investing so much time and personal wealth in bringing home all the works that the Valzuela Collection has been gathering implies a plan for the future that goes beyond self-interest and becomes a decision that involves society, especially when the collection occupies a public exhibition space.
